Philosophy
Barris Lotterer Management Consulting (BLMC) is typically
called upon by a new client to look at an issue in the product
development or the product fulfillment process that is constraining
growth or significantly impacting profit. These companies
have lost their focus; are out of capacity; about to go
off a cliff, or up one; and need to lower their base cost
of operations in order to be more competitive.
We work to establish close, long-term working relationships
with our clients, and we take the time to understand their
businesses objectives and management styles so that we
can anticipate and respond to their needs. In many situations
we have deep experience in the area of concern, i.e.,
disk drive manufacturing, thin film head manufacturing,
semiconductor fabrication, assembly and test of boards
or integrated circuits, aircraft manufacturing, and factory
automation.
We typically begin a project with a short paid assessment
to understand the specific problems and the environment
in which change will occur. These are typically 1-2 weeks
in length. This assessment will result in an end-to-end
view of the process of concern...the As-Is State.
We will define the As-Is State in the sense of what
we saw, what we think about what we saw and the comparison
of this business process to the Best-in-Class. We
will provide the client with a sense of the gap(s)
and a priority of what to fix first. We examine the
end-to-end processes as well as the management systems
around them.
We will also define a To-Be State including the
optimized process, the management systems around it,
the economics of the change (income statement and
balance sheet impacts), and the project costs and
schedule.
If the proposed savings is greater than ten times
our proposed fees, we would like the opportunity to
propose on the final design and implementation of
that design.
We are all about execution,
not studies. We have a bias to action and change in our
work. Our projects are short in length…months, not
years, with visible savings at the end of the projects.
Our consulting team consists of a few highly skilled
people (2-5) transferring knowledge to a large customer
team (15-30 people) who will design the solution and own
the results. Our consultants are highly experienced professionals
who typically have an engineering or advanced technical
degree and an MBA from a name school.
"Once an organization
loses its spirit of pioneering and rests on its early work,
its progress stops."
